Compare Cheap DSL, Cable & Dialup Broadband Security Features
If your kids play online role playing games that involve large amounts of people playing at the same time, there are some security issues to be aware of. It is very important for you as a parent to oversee the accounts of your children to make sure they are safe. Be sure your cable, DSL or dialup ISP has security components enabled.
Many of the most popular games for children are now online and involve uniting people from all over the world to interact over the net at the same time. There is a massive amount of communication that occurs between the players, thus potentially causing a security issue. In this day and age of a virtual world you can never be too careful.
Unfortunately your ISP does not monitor these online games as a part of your security filter. Most of the ISP’s in the US have security features and online parental control for surfing the net but they don’t reach across the gaming platform. So the only way to know what your kids are playing is by staying involved.
The most important thing you can do is keep an open line of communication so that you develop trust with your teen. This way they will be open about what they are doing online. The most important lesson you can give you kids is to let them know to never give out personal information. If they are playing games that is a virtual world with make believe information and they should alert you if anyone tries to acquire personal information.
Have them tell you what games they’re playing, and the account information that they’ve entered, so you can monitor your kids’ activity in the game. You also need to know your kid’s password so you can get into their account without to check it once in awhile - monitor what they have been doing. Set limits on how much time your teenager spends on the computer or online games, so that they don’t become fixated or hooked to the game. Set down some rules, and let him/her know that homework be completed before playing online games. Also, set up any parental controls the game may have developed for safety purposes.
High speed Internet providers made online games happen - with dial-up services the bandwidth is not sufficient for such thing to happen. The increasing demand of online, interactive gaming has made an importance to monitor your kids’ activity online, and guarantee they don’t spend too much time staring at their computer screen.
For World of Warcraft to be specific, there are settings made especially for parental control. If there is a kid who plays the game, this will be useful. Of course, even with parental control settings, you have to monitor younger kids play online games at all times.
Why not get totally involved by playing the same games with them. While it is not exactly cool to have your mom play a game with you when you are a teen. Remember this is a virtual world and no one knows that the person behind the mask is related to your children. Scary!
