The Nintendo Wii Fit Balance Board

by Patrik Gisselsson

Nintendo’s fitness game for the Wii is on pace to become the fastest selling Wii game ever. The game, simply named “Fit”, has outdone all previous records on Play.com by selling out its entire allocation in just one day.

Wii Fit comes with a pressure sensitive Balance board that you put in front of your TV. The board detects any directional changes in balance and is used to interact with the game in various activites. Ofcourse the board uses wireless technology to save you from hurting yourself stumbling over cables on the floor.

The big question people have been asking “can this really get you fit?” In fact several studies have claimed that Wii games can help you with fitness and even promote weight loss because they’re so physical. John Moores University in Liverpool found that users could lose up to 12kg a year from exercising daily using Wii Sports sessions

Wii Fit is divided into 4 categories of exercises: Aerobic exercise, Muscle Conditioning, Yoga Poses and Balance Games. In total there are around 40 different activities included. Examples of the training are:

Step Aerobic Exercise: a game in which the player must step on and off the Wii Balance Board in rhythm to the background music.

Muscle Conditioning: Wii Fit features controlled motions using arms, legs and other body parts.

Yoga exercise: Classic poses in Wii Fit focus on balance and stretching.

Ski jumping: Whereby the player squats as low as possible, while maintaining his or her balance, and then quickly stands as fast as possible in order to gain a good jump

Balance Games: Wii Fit features fun activities, such as heading soccer balls and hula hooping, that challenge the Wii Fit player’s overall body balance.

The Wii Balance board doesn’t end with Wii Fit. Nintendo has already planned at least 10 more games that will support it’s unique balance-based interface. All kind of games from fighting to sports games that suit this kind of controller.

Use the Wii Balance Board for daily Wii Fit tests: Tests offered by the Wii Fit evaluate two key measures that everyone can track via progress charts:

Body Mass Index (BMI): A weight evaluation based on a ratio of weight to height. Wii Fit Age: The Wii Fit Age is measured by factoring the user’s BMI reading, testing the Wii Fit user’s center of gravity and conducting quick balance tests.

The Wii balance board has a weight limit of 136kg so if you want to use it and your already over that weight you’ll have to start loosing weight now!! Once your down to the weight limit and you start using the wii fit board im sure the weight will drop off you and you’ll be as fit as a butchers dog!
